Welcome to The Monthly Hoot, now on Substack! You might already follow us here to get behind-the-episode content from Hannah and Marcelle. We decided to migrate our monthly newsletter over to Substack so we are 1) only using one platform and 2) able to reach more people!

What else have we been up to? Well, we continue to pop off on YouTube, which you might want to subscribe to… for no reason. No reason at all. (← me when I lie) (there is a reason, we just can’t tell you what it is yet).

Other things we’ve been discussing include Travis Kelce as the Ken to Taylor Swift’s Barbie (again, for no reason at all), the “incessant marching forward of chronology” (a thing Hannah said while looking at a baby picture of Marcelle’s Blast-Ended Screwt), and how listening “party 4 u” by Charli XCX on repeat for three weeks has changed Coach from the inside out.

Feral little guys on the feral little guy beat

We had the pleasure of releasing two super fun episodes about being a nasty little creature.

We were delighted to be joined by McKayla Coyle (they/them), author of Goblin Mode: How to Get Cozy, Embrace Imperfection, and Thrive in the Muck, to dig into the term “Goblin Mode.” Hannah leads Marcelle and McKayla through a discussion on 'the abject,' a concept from Bulgarian-French feminist philosopher Julia Kristeva. We talk about the racialized and ableist construction of bodies and boundaries — and how that may help us understand the radical potential of going 'goblin mode.'

Next, we talked all about what happens when a rich guy wants to fuck the ocean, and what happens is Avatar! Hannah leads Marcelle through a conversation about colonialism, sexism, marketing budgets and how the interests of white dude billionaires drives our reality.

I have a fraught relationship with horror as a genre. I think it has the potential to be transgressive and thrilling, to tell stories that other genres simply can’t (including queer ones), but I am a scared little baby with a history of night terrors and intrusive thoughts so I have to be very selective with my horror consumption. I like my horror fantastical and literary (films are, frankly, too much), and I like it queer, and I like it to include monstrous women if at all possible. If that aligns with your own tastes, here are a couple of very gay seasonal recommendations for you.First, queer Canadian comic artist Emily Carroll is a font of exactly the kind of shit I love, especially her collection **Through the Woods**. These short graphic narratives have the shivery feeling of campfire stories, combined with Carroll’s striking art, which uses negative space and a largely black and white and red palette to tremendously creepy effect. More recently I read and loved Cassandra Khaw’s **The Salt Grows Heavy**, a horror novella that reimagines how The Little Mermaid may have played out if mermaids had teeth. The story begins with the mermaid birthing a thousand monstrous daughters who immediately devour the prince’s kingdom, and things escalate from there.

It's decorative gourd season, ~~motherfuckers~~ witches! Whether you are into buying seasonal decor from the big chains or growing your own, I suggest dropping by your nearest farmers market and treating yourself to a cute little ornamental squash. In my twenties I learned that the way we pronounce gourd in Canada (we call them "GOOrds" because there is a U in the word and (sometimes) we respect it) is somewhat different from the American pronunciation ("Gords," like a collection of white guys in flannel who use beer Koozies and have literally never touched an axe), but what matters here is **not** **how one utters vowels. No, what matters is that wherever you are, there is only a brief window of time when it is socially acceptable to bring small, inedible, warty, lil' guys into your home** **just because.** **So get yourself to a farmers market and buy a compostable Autumn accessory before it's too late!**

I have, if you believe, moved cities once again and currently find myself in sublet-land. That means my willingness to buy groceries is at a low and my desire to cook is clouded by the fear of overstepping my temporary roomie's modus operandi in the kitchen. All to say, I'm barely cooking, but if I **were** to make something right now, I would bake these. I made Japanese milk buns this summer and assembled the yummiest breakfast sandwiches with them for like four days. Elevate your fall breakfasts! Note: you need milk powder to make these but then they are really easy!

**I feel like recommending this movie to** **Material Girls** **listeners is like preaching to the choir, but I’m going to do just that. Go. See.** **Bottoms**. It was so good. If that simply isn’t enough to strike your interest, here are some reasons to go see it: everyone is so so hot; lesbians being messy and raunchy; Marshawn Lynch killing it; okay, this one is more personal to me, but I am confident that you will feel the same way: I am in love with Ruby Cruz. But specifically when she has that shag haircut and wears polo shirts; Ayo Edebiri. Enough said.

**Every day I wake up. Every day, I simply** **must** find the joy. For the past month or so, I’ve been taking little jaunts around my new neighborhood, sweating my ass off and generally petting dogs/looking at cats in the window. On these jaunts, I’ve been listening to **Iconography**, which is a podcast hosted by Ayo Edebiri and Olivia Craighead, and now every time I go outside I have the Pavlovian urge to start singing the really fun theme song. The premise of the show is simple: a guest will bring their icon (for example, Carly Rae Jepsen, Keanu Reeves, Emma Thompson, etc) and Ayo, Olivia, and guest will determine if this is an icon that will stand the test of time. If you like celebs, being silly, and getting invested in a podcast that hasn’t been updated since August 2020, this is the one for you.
